Christmas Concert:
Rave Reviews
The Friends of the American
Library had the pleasure of sponsoring the traditional Madrigalistes de Montpellier
Christmas Concert on December 21st.
Despite last-minute problems
involving a change of location, the concert was a brilliant success.
The public's reaction to the evenings program was overwhelmingly positive. It was very gratifying to see that the
church (the very large "Notre Dame des Tables") was filled to capacity with an
enthusiastic audience.
The Madrigalistes were all in excellent voice and several
surprises punctuated the program. The tolling of the church bells prepared the audience
for a very special concert as they entered the building. Raphaël Charpentier played the
drums (do I see a musical dynasty in the making here?). The singers donned red noses for
their interpretation of "Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer"! And finally, Notre
Dames magnificent organ added to the powerful finish of the program.
We would like to thank the many members of the
Friends of the American Library who volunteered to help with the production of the
concert. We dont have the space to thank everyone individually, but you know who you
are! Feedback from the audience shows that everyone felt very well received and welcome.
You all did a great job!
As you may know, the concert was produced by the
"Friends" as a pleasant means to raise funds for the Association. Were
pleased to announce that after paying all of the expenses involved, the Friends of the
American Library raised over eight thousand francs. This money will be used for several
projects including the purchase of a new circulation desk for the Library. The current
desk is now well over twenty years old and is about to collapse! Well have further
reports in future newsletters.

Assemblée Générale
February 2, 1998
The annual General Meeting (Assemblée Générale)
of the Friends of the American Library is scheduled for Monday, February 2, 1998 at noon.
Mme. Claude Clerc has announced that she will be unable to
continue as President of the Association citing personal reasons.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Claude for her
tireless leadership over the past year as well as her continuing dedication to the
interests of the Library! We extend to her our best wishes for all of her future
endeavors.
Word for Word
The Word for Word Theater
Company is returning to Montpellier for a new performance.
This years story is by Langston Hughes, a
noted African-American writer of the 20s - 60s. The story is called "The
Blues Im Playing". The Library has a copy of the story available for
members. Just ask at the Circulation desk.
We are looking for "Friends" living in the
center of town who would be willing to provide lodging for the seven members of the cast.
The troupe will be staying in Montpellier from the 19th through the 21st of March.
